Cover Song Saturday: Kenny Chesney – “Christmas in Dixie”

This is one of my favorite Christmas songs – reminds me of my childhood.

Merry Christmas!

Cover Song Saturday: Jimmy Buffett – “I’ll be Home for Christmas”

The song is sung from the point of view of a soldier stationed overseas during World War II, writing a letter to his family. In the message, he tells the family he will be coming home and to prepare the holiday for him, and requests snow, mistletoe, and presents on the tree. The song ends on a melancholy note, with the soldier saying, “I’ll be home for Christmas, if only in my dreams”. Kim Gannon claimed on at least one occasion that he was not thinking of the soldiers when he wrote the lyrics but of all people who are unable to be home for Christmas. When he pitched the song to people in the music business, they turned it down because the final line was too sad for all those separated from their loved ones in the military. When playing golf with Bing Crosby, however, Gannon sang the song for Crosby, who decided to record it. The flip side of the original recording (Decca 18570B) was “Danny Boy” Source: I’ll Be Home for Christmas – Wikipedia

Cover Song Saturday: Epica – Imperial March

It has been a while since I posted something for Cover Song Saturday, but this was such a cool version of this song that I thought I had to share it. Will Cover Song Saturday return? Will it crawl out from the blogging ooze to be reborn? Not sure, but I hope you enjoy this one this week. Love this cover version combining two of my favorite things – Star Wars and Metal.

So, use the force and tell me which one you prefer? I like both of them, but you will never go wrong with the original. It is classic and timeless. It will transcend the ages.

Something just for fun.

Cover Song Saturday: Mumford and Sons and Elvis Costello – The Ghost of Tom Joad

Thanks mypiratechambers.wordpress.com for the inspiration for this post.

Original

Cover

I will always go with the original of this song – just smooth and thought-provoking with that acoustic sound and Bruce’s voice. His voice alone makes the original heads and tails above the cover. It just sounds so mournful, so full of despair, so full of hopelessness. With that said, the cover version is great to listen to. It does capture the spirit of the original, but it just doesn’t punch you in the gut like that version.

So, original or cover?

I also like this version of it a lot. Killer guitar work and Tom’s voice sounds great singing these lyrics.

Cover Song Saturday: Jimmy Buffett – Scarlet Begonias

Original

Cover

Since I heard it first by Buffett, I have to lean in that direction. I also am a huge Buffett fan (as most of you know), so I will almost always lean in his direction. I do like the Dead’s version a lot though, but I’m only an occasional Dead fan so their version just doesn’t grab me as much as Mr. Margaritaville. Just saying. So, your call, going with the Deadheads or the Parrotheads on this one?

Cover Song Saturday – Lucky Uke: Love Bites

ORIGINAL

COVER

I’m a big time Def Leppard fan, and I have been since “Pyromania.” So it should come as no shock that I am going with the original on this one. It is such a great Power Ballad that it can be argued it was one of the best to come out of the Eighties. You can decide for yourself on that one, but it is a great song no matter what labels you put on it.

With all that said, the cover of this song is truly amazing to listen to. Peppy and upbeat, sounding like something straight out of Hawaii. It is very catchy and very good, but it doesn’t have the edge of the original version. This song was meant to be a Power Ballad and it should always stay that way.

So, original or remake? Are you a big Def Leppard fan?

Cover Song Saturday: Jimmy Buffett – Mexico

The Original

The Cover

An even draw. I honestly think they both are great. I couldn’t choose between them. They both just have such a good easy breezy vibe. Either one will put you in a positive mood and take you away for a bit.

So, which do you prefer?

The original or the cover.

Cover Song Saturday: Johnny B. Goode – Peter Tosh vs. Judas Priest

I think we all know the original. It is a classic that can’t be touched. No artist could ever cover it and make it better than Chuck Berry.

The original is great. I’ve stated that already, so let’s move onto the covers. Both of which are unique in their own way.

First, Peter Tosh

Second, Judas Priest

I love Heavy Metal, proud to say that, but I have to give the nod this time to Peter Tosh. He didn’t just remake this song louder and heavier like Judas Priest, but he took the song and made it his own. The reggae beat and the new lyrics splashed throughout just gives this song a totally different feel and it works from start to finish.

So, which do you prefer?

Peter Tosh or Judas Priest

Cover Song Saturday: Jimmy Buffett – Southern Cross

The Original

The Cover

Jimmy’s version is just better. It has more life and more energy, and it has long been one of my concert favorites. I don’t know how many times I’ve just gone bug nuts when he started to play this song. I knew this would be a lopsided one for me today, a biased one if you want to say it that way, but I had to post his cover of this song. It is just such a great cover.

So, which do you prefer?

The original or the cover.

Cover Song Saturday: Tim McGraw – Tiny Dancer

The Original

The Cover

So, which do you prefer?

I’m going with Tim’s version on this one. It is modern, updated, and smoother than the original. I also feel like Elton’s version (along with Elton himself) is just played out. His music doesn’t seem to resonate as strongly these days as he when he was popular. You Elton fans out there may disagree with me, but it is just the way I feel.

Cover Song Saturday – Justin Moore: Home Sweet Home

The original

The cover version

So, which do you prefer?

The original hands down for me. It not only takes me back to my teen years, but this song just sounds better with the metal power behind. It just wasn’t meant to be a country song even though Justin Moore really gives it his all.

I don’t know if you have heard about this new blogging platform Niume or not. I stumbled on it a while back and just recently started posting to it. It is set up a lot like WordPress. I’ve posted some cover songs and other things over there. If you want to check it out, here’s the link: niume.com

Cover Song Saturday – Tori Amos: Raining Blood

I just can’t get enough of this song. Heavy, fast, and mean.

Now, the new version – simply haunting.

So, which is your favorite? I’m a Metalhead at heart, so Slayer’s version wins out for me. I do though respect Tori for putting a very eerie spin on what was already an intense song.

Cover Song Saturday – Godsmack: Rocky Mountain Way

Never been a gigantic fan of this song, and I’m not a big fan of Godsmack either. So, why post these songs you may ask? Because Godsmack’s version of this song is great. It really gives this song a punch I didn’t think it had. Listen to the original and then the remake. Tell me you don’t agree.

The original.

The cover version.

So, which is your favorite? I like the energy of the remake. It makes me want to listen to this song a lot more now. Guess that means I am leaning more to that one.

Cover Song Saturday (5/14/2016) – Disturbed: The Sound of Silence

I’ve been tinkering around about this in my head for a bit. A weekly post all about cover songs. I am sort of into that kind of thing. I love to hear a song I’ve heard a thousand times changed and transformed into something new or different. Case in point, this song. Disturbed really shows the darkness hidden inside this song that I think the original never managed to capture. “Silence like a cancer grows” is such a bleak sounding line, and Disturbed’s version of this song really highlights it. Here are the two songs. Compare and enjoy. If this is a hit I would like to start doing it once a week.

Incredible lyrics. Now, the new version.

So, which is your favorite?

I have to say that this new one just gives it a darker punch that really draws out those lyrics. I’m leaning towards the new one now, but I have and will always love the original.
