Tuesdays with Mike and The Mike Beem Chronicles (12/12/2017): Zombie Beach

This short story is told in two parts.

Part 1: Mike and Captain

On the Coast, Mike runs into an old Sea Captain and they form an instant bond. Mike learns of Captain’s boat, his son and daughter-in-law. Captain is desperate to get off Carolina Beach, but there is a problem (and it is a big problem) the town is swarming with zombies. Mike decides to help the old man fight his way through the hordes in order to gain safe passage on his boat.

Part 2: Mike and Myrtle Beach

Alone again. Mike finds an old motel on the South Carolina coast and decides to call it home. While rebuilding his life and motel he meets some new friends, fights off countless numbers of zombies, and settles into his new life by the sea.

The zombie Mike was about to shoot was an ugly sucker, and staring right up at him from the sand below. The zombie had the majority of the left side of his face torn off, huge holes in his neck and arms. He was dressed in pink and green blood-stained golf pants, spiked shoes, and dirty black golf shirt.

“Fore!” Mike screamed, and then shot the golfer zombie right between the eyes. The top of its head exploded, splattering blood and rotten brains all over the pristine white sand.  He looked from the dead zombie to the ocean, and then to the left and right. The gunshot had been loud, but it hadn’t sent the few corpses on the beach shambling in his direction. They seemed to be scattered, not hording together, trudging along with difficulty. A couple of zombies had even gotten stuck and as the water rushed in and around them, they found themselves in a hopeless situation where sand kept burying their feet and ankles over and over again.

Mike hopped down from the once white lifeguard tower where he had spent the night, and looked at the buildings around him. He didn’t see what he was looking for in the high rises and few beach homes that lined this part of the shore, so he moved on, reloading his pistol, eyes focused and ready for trouble.

Fred climbed into the passenger seat, and when he looked out the window he saw two zombies shambling towards him. He pulled up his gun, and gripped the door handle, ready to step out of the vehicle with his gun blazing.

Two quick shots rang out, and as Fred watched, the skulls on each zombie exploded, showering the truck in blood and chunks of rotten brain matter.

Fred opened the door, gun drawn, and when he stepped outside he saw Double walking towards him. “What’re you doing down here?” He asked.

“Getting you out of a jam, thank you very much,” she replied.

“I appreciate it, but I had it handled.”

“You sure about that?”

He grunted, hating to admit she was right. “Since you’re here. Would you mind checking out Guard Tower 1 and 2? I’ll check out 3 and 4.”

“Okay. I’ll make my way on over.”

“Hey, Double, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Thanks. You saved my ass.”

“Anytime,” she replied, and ran off towards Guard Tower 1, shooting at several zombies lurking nearby.

Fred watched the undead creature’s heads explode, and then made his way towards Guard Tower 3.

5 Stars out of 5: I dearly love this author’s short stories

Mike lay in restless slumber, haunted by this world, haunted by the memories of those who had fallen, haunted by the ghosts of his past.

Donna Marie snuggled in close to him and stroked his long grey hair, trying to soothe him, trying to help him sleep. As she looked at him, lying there, she couldn’t believe she had fallen for a man who was just past 40-years-of-age.

Mike stirred, and opened his eyes. He turned his face to meet her eyes. She might have been 32, but her eyes carried the worry and trouble of so many who now lived in this world. “Couldn’t sleep?” He asked.

“I worry about you when you’re out there,” she replied, as Mike held her close. “We’re working clogs operating in a broken clock.”

“Are you worried about me going back out for that kid, Tommy?”

“Not just that. Every time you go out I worry about you. I wish you could just stay here and let everyone else do the running. Lord knows you’ve done more than most in this world. Building this place alone qualifies you for that,” Donna Marie replied, rolling over and sitting up. She slipped out of bed and covered her topless body with a house robe. She walked over to the window and looked outside. The snow was no longer falling, but the ground was covered in a heavy layer of white. Somewhere close to a foot, maybe a bit more, she guessed.

Mike watched her for a moment, and let the cool air of the room settle in on top of his bare chest.

Tuesdays with Mike and The Mike Beem Chronicles (11/21/2017): A Zombie Christmas

5 out of 5 stars – A Cute Little Holiday Horror Story

This short story is about three men who risk life and limb in a Zombie Apocalypse in order to bring happiness to surviving kids on Christmas Morning.

Mike woke up the next morning to a knock at the door and a quiet house. The Christmas tree was still sparkling and doing its thing, the ornaments hanging here and there with a precision touch, neat and organized, as he grabbed a pistol nearby, shook the bad dream cobwebs free, and walked over to the peephole.

He peered through, and then reached down and unlocked the door after putting his pistol away.

“I was wondering if you were going to let us in or not,” Jim Wells replied, as he stepped into the house. He turned around to see where Fred was. He was still standing guard on the top step, so intent on watching the area that he didn’t even know the door was open or that two people were talking. “He’s good Mike, too good sometimes.” Jim tapped the man on the shoulder. “Fred. It’s safe. We can go inside.”

Fred Walg didn’t jump or move in any spastic manner when he was tapped on the shoulder, he just turned and followed after them.

“Can I get you guys something to drink?” Mike asked, closing and locking the door.

The three guys meandered into the living room. Jim and Fred took a seat on opposite ends of the couch while Mike worked on getting a fire started.

Tuesdays with Mike and The Mike Beem Chronicles (11/14/2017): A Zombie Thanksgiving

5 out of 5 stars: Keeping hope alive.

A short story about a woman who risks life and limb in a Zombie Apocalypse in order to keep the Thanksgiving tradition alive.

+

Dawn stopped at the edge of the parking lot. What she saw in front of her was an apocalyptic nightmare. It was a picture of mass panic frozen in a time of chaos.

The parking lot looked like a war zone–cars burned to metal bodies, cars crashed together, cars turned over, shopping carts everywhere and in all kinds of positions, (food and supplies in these carts long since looted), and bodies, lots and lots of dead bodies. Most of them had been laying out here rotting in the hot sun for far too long, and they were now decayed and gooey, slipping back into the Earth one second at a time.

She closed her eyes, held the gold cross on a chain around her neck, prayed, and then crossed the parking lot.

She stopped when she reached the double doors that led into the grocery store. Sunlight gleamed off what was left of the glass in the frame, shards on the ground twinkled like stars. Two zombies shuffled out of the store, heading in her tasty direction. Dead things. Rotten things. Been walking around for a long time now as a corpse things. A couple of quick pops of her gun and both of them went down hard. Perfect, clean, head shots. Blood splattered ground.

Dawn looked to her left and right, back to the store in front of her, and then she turned around to make sure nothing was behind her. No other zombies shuffled about in the late fall heat, at least not from where she was standing; but there was a man, she did see a man, coming across the parking lot towards her. He stood about medium height, not to pudgy, not too thin. He had to be about 40 years old, she thought, as he put his hands up to show he wasn’t a threat.

“Who are you?” She asked, as she aimed her gun at him.

The guy looked down at her gun with the silencer on it, pointed directly at his gut. A nasty shot that would not end him instantly. “My name’s Mike, Mike Beem. You?”

“Dawn Sprig,” she replied, and paused. “Have you been following me?”

“I haven’t, just happened to see you crossing the parking lot. Thought I would walk over and see if you needed any help.”

“I’m fine.” She wasn’t, because she was terrified of being out here on her own without her boyfriend. So, she faked it the best she could. “Just need to do a little shopping. I hope my credit is still good,” she replied, smiling, hoping to ease the tension.

“Store’s probably picked over.”

“Probably, but there might be something left for the Thanksgiving Holiday,” she replied, lowering her weapon.

“I’m stuck on Christmas.”

“Any luck?”

“Some.” He paused. “You sure you don’t want me to go in with you? I can help if the store is overrun. Always nice to have back up.”

She wanted to say yes, she really did, but even though she had lowered her gun, stranger danger still popped into her mind when she looked at him. He might seem like a nice guy out here, but in there, in the dark, he could be someone totally different. “I’d rather go it alone. If you don’t mind? I’m better that way. No offense.”

“None taken. I Understand.”

“Thanks, though, for the offer.”

“Sure. Good luck and Happy Thanksgiving.”

“You too, Mike.”

He made his way out of the parking lot, and Dawn took another quick scan. No zombies about, just Mike evaporating into the distance. She turned back to the store, steadied her nerves, and turned on her light (this light was on a strap that ran around her head, so she could keep her hands free).  She made sure her weapons were ready to do the job they were meant to do, knife in place and gun ready to fire. She started to walk, ever so slightly, crunching on broken glass, moving from the light into the dark.

Since it is Halloween, I thought I would pull out three random moments in Zombie Beach in order to celebrate this day. Enjoy.

Mike slid the key into the lock, and waited to see if he had been discovered. He hadn’t. Whoever or whatever was making the sound was paying no attention to him. He unlocked the door, turned the handle, and pushed the door into the room. What he saw when the door was open was another one of those smart zombies. It was dressed like a house keeper in a bloody blue ripped and torn dress, wearing comfortable shoes. The elderly zombie woman had no left arm. It was completely torn free from her body leaving only a ragged stump surrounded by shredded fabric. She was using her right arm and hand to run the silent vacuum across the floor again and again.

When he reached the top, he paused when he saw a zombie stumble and shuffle out of one of the open doorways. It was dressed in sandals, shorts, tee-shirt, and sun visor. His exposed skin was yellowed and rotten. He salivated maggots and had large palmetto bugs crawling up and down his body. It looked like it’d been lying in wait for some time, and now that he was up and moving the bugs calling him home were severely disturbed.

Mike pulled out his gun, and made sure it was ready to fire. He watched as this moving thing went from the deep end to the shallow end, slowly revealing itself as it emerged from its resting place underneath the water. The zombie (dressed in lifeguard gear complete with whistle) reached the stairs that led out of the pool, eyeballing Mike, rotten body water logged and full of nasty liquid, covered in leeches, and algae – blue-green algae that had consumed the entire left side of its face, the eye in that socket barely visible. It was hungry for a long awaited feast, and Mike’s warm body was just perfect for that.

Mike woke up, and lay on the couch for a moment trying to figure out where he was – dream world or real world. He smelled fresh food cooking.

“You okay?” Captain asked from the doorway.

“Yeah, just some bad dream demons,” Mike replied, sitting up and placing his feet on the floor. He sat there a moment and stared at the roaring fire, trying to let the nightmare fog clear in his head.

“I know all about those. I have breakfast made. Sausage, oatmeal, nothing too grand. Come on when you’re ready,” Captain replied, as he made his way back to the kitchen.

Mike stood up and stretched, and made his way out into the hall. When he was in the small hallway, he saw not only a packed duffel bag, but an ancient wheel chair. It looked like it’d rarely been used. On the side table near the door were three pistols and extra ammunition. Captain looked like he was prepared not only to leave, but to handle his business if need be. Mike smiled and made his way into the kitchen . . .

When Mike Beem’s community is savagely attacked, he must exact revenge on those who wronged him. He must put aside all the good he has ever accomplished in order to become someone else. A man without a moral compass. A man without right or wrong. A man who is a cold blooded killer. Will he get his justice or will he die trying? The answers lie within the pages of this short story.

Zombie Beach: Mike Beem has given it all up and run off to live by the beach. Life down on the coast isn’t all that it should be. Days of lying in the sun are replaced with brutal survival. Mike does his best to not only survive, but to rebuild a life among the ruins of these beach side towns.
