The Opening to Gluten Free

My name is Alan Category and by the time you read this I will be dead.  Yes, that’s not a typo.  My last name is Category.  I was born with it, mocked with it, lived with it, made love with it, got married three times with it, divorced twice with it, and folks, those reading this, I will die with it.  That name will be engraved on my tombstone right above my head where I will be lying six feet under the dirt, waiting on the worms to come and finish me off.  You see, I am Gluten Free and I am supposed to stay Gluten Free for the rest of my life. I have a rare condition, maybe four people in the entire world have it. Gluten is not just an allergy for me, but a killer. A bona-fide suck your soul out of your body and send it to heaven or hell killer. I have to worry about not only eating it, but getting it anywhere near my body.  I can’t even inhale it.  It is just that lethal for me.  And you know what?  I’m tired of thinking about it, tired of restricting my fucking diet, tired of fucking paying for it, just plain tired of trying live in a world that isn’t Gluten fucking Free.  I’m also tired of worrying about my weight, tired of exercise, tired of just doing it all for that fucking bitch who ripped out my heart and shat all over it. You see, I love pizza and I haven’t had it for so very long.  Sure, I’ve had the Gluten Free stuff, some of it isn’t bad, but that shit ain’t pizza.  That melt in your mouth traditional kind of pizza that makes your knees buckle. Almost gives you an orgasm kind of pizza. It just isn’t and won’t ever be no matter how they try to make it seem that way. Anyway, off on a rant there for a minute.  Where was I?  Damn my hand is cramping up. Fucking arthritis. Sucks to get old, but shit I don’t have to be getting older very much longer. (I chuckled here in case one of my bitch ex-wives reads this, yes bitch, I went out laughing). Anyway, once again, you see pizza is the most lethal thing I can eat.  I was told that by my doctor. Cunt! She said pizza would kill me instantly, and I have avoided it till tonight.  Till this very night. But now, I’ve decided it is the best way to go out even if it is a fucking rip off. 20 damn bucks for extra cheese, thick crust, and meat – total bullshit! So my suicide will be self-inflicted, but it won’t be the way most people opt out, cash in the check so to speak – gun in mouth, brains splattered across the wall, hanging from a self-made noose, leaping off a tall building, you know the drill. My suicide will be a little more painful.  Wait, what’s that?  I hear a car pulling up outside, footsteps on the gravel parking lot, footsteps on the concrete stoop in front of my door, a knock, my death rattle.  Okay, folks, let me answer that door.

She began to cry.

It was one of those pathetic cries, filled with self-pity, and frustration. She had dreamed of so much more for herself than this at thirty two years of age. She wanted to be a writer, maybe a Graphic Designer with a family in the Burbs somewhere by now. She had never dreamed she would be stuck in a job with no future, living alone on a paycheck-to-paycheck budget. Dreams die hard when dreams decide to die.

She turned towards the door when something caught her attention. There was light pushing into the room around the edges of it.

She rolled off the bed, put on a pair of shorts and a tee-shirt, and then grabbed the loaded gun lying on top of the nightstand. She cocked it, and walked with slow caution towards the door that led into her apartment. Her heart was pounding in her chest, as her lungs filled with heavy air.

She reached the door, and slipped her hands into the light. It had texture. It was warm, and soothing, and glowing yellow-gold. She felt love in that light. A hope of a family. A wanting of a child.

When Mike Beem’s community is savagely attacked, he must exact revenge on those who wronged him. He must put aside all the good he has ever accomplished in order to become someone else. A man without a moral compass. A man without right or wrong. A man who is a cold blooded killer. Will he get his justice or will he die trying? The answers lie within the pages of this short story.

Mike raced down the street towards Benny’s white two room house, black combat boots smacking the ground underneath him. The gear he was wearing was slowing his pace, so he moved as fast as he could. Thankful he was at least wearing camo pants today. Their fabric was loose, cool, and comfortable.

When he reached the house, he slowed his pace, and moved up to the gate. It was hanging open, so he stepped through and made his way up the sidewalk to the porch. Two zombies (a man and a woman) on his left caught his attention. They had their arms around each other, swinging in the porch swing like lovers lost in love. He shot them both with two quick head shots before they could stand. They tumbled to the floor in a heap, and laid there unmoving side by side. Their weird zombie love thing now extinguished.

Mike turned to face the door, which was hanging open. The sun may have been shining, but it was dark inside the house. He took out his flashlight, put it into his mouth, cocked his gun, and stepped into the black.

Dusk was settling in the world around them, the snow falling as heavy as it’d fallen all day, and little did they know, zombies were starting to move in.

“Eric, can you stop? My feet feel weird,” Bobby replied, as he leaned against a car. The four occupants inside of the car were partially eaten and frozen.

Eric stopped and put the carrier down. The cat let out a soft meow as it sat there and watched the scene unfold. In the dim light, Eric knelt down and looked at Bobby’s feet. He’d given Bobby some extra clothes for the walk – a warm hat for his head and ears, gloves, and another sweat shirt. They’d gotten his body warm, but forgot about his feet. The tennis shoes Bobby was wearing were soaked through, and it was obvious that the feet needed some immediate warmth. It would be hard to contend with frost bite in a world like this.

“How long has it been?”

“A while.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want to slow us down.”

From somewhere out in the growing darkness they heard a moan. It was distant, but it was still a sound they didn’t need to hear. The cat arched his back and let out a screech.

His friends joined him a second later, and the gear was quickly swept up by all five of them. With gear in hand and five flashlights beaming, they walked over to the gate and stopped. This gate was attached to a silver rusty fence, which was broken in many spots as it made its way around the forgotten yard. Kevin pulled the gate open, and it let out a screech that sounded like a scream, as the rusty hinges were forced back into service. He stepped onto the broken sidewalk, which was mostly tall grass and weeds now, and led the way to the busted porch.

The others, of course, followed him.

When they reached the porch, they stopped. The six wooden steps that led onto it were mostly broken, and the rotten rails were detached and laying in the overgrown shrubbery, so they all took their time getting onto this porch with the gear in hand.

Once on the porch, which was creaking and moaning and generally pissed off that someone was standing on it, they could see that the front door with the busted lock had a “No Trespassing!” sign slanted sideways across it.

A 1 Day Freebie: The Lot

This short story is about a Christmas Tree lot that has evil intentions.

+

The Christmas tree lot stood cold and silent beside the two lane road now covered in 6 inches of snow. Gavin Douglas was hunkered down inside the small building attached to The Lot. He stood 6 foot 5, tall and lanky, a once healthy thirty-year-old man who now looked like he had spent the last two months inside a sweat box. He was emaciated and weak looking, ribs showing through his skin. His face hung droopy and long, teeth rotting away, some had fallen out. His once thick hair now hung thin, patchy, and lifeless across his skull. His clothes were dirty and disheveled, unclean like the rest of his body. He hadn’t been able to eat, sleep, shower, or do anything normal since the pine trees had arrived in October, because he felt like it was his job and duty to protect his town, a town he loved more than his own life.

Friday Freebie: Nightlight Tales

Nightlight Tales - High Resolution

A ZOMBIE NEW YEAR’S EVE: The city of Raleigh stood dark and lifeless behind a small single-story home where a thriving family once lived.

Sleet was falling hard, and bouncing off the silent objects of this now-broken world.

Three men hurried their way up the porch steps of this house, as the sun started to approach the horizon, choked out by dark grey clouds. The men looked at each other, and then one of them reached down and tested the front door handle.

Unlocked.

He slipped open the door to the sounds of a roaring fire, and bright light that covered the room where the woman they were chasing slept on a couch, unarmed.

The three men had been traveling up I-40 when they saw the girl walk up one of the exit ramps, a ramp that used to lead into the busy city of Raleigh. They hadn’t seen a prize like this in a long time, so they were more than happy to track her through the city filled with some of the thickest zombie hordes they had ever seen. They had fought their way through, just like the girl on the couch, surviving on instincts and human determination.

The man who had opened the door, turned back to his friends and gave them the okay sign, as he stepped into the warmth and out of the cold. The other two guys slithered in behind him.

Once inside, the door now closed and locked, they eyed their sleeping prize as she slept in peaceful slumber on the couch.

First Time Freebie: Vampires and Zombies: The Undead Collection

vampsandz

IT SLEEPS AT DAWN: She gripped her nerves tight, pushed back the fear, and stepped up to the door that she hoped led out of the long hallway and into freedom. The door was made of solid oak, black from top to bottom and side to side, with a gold door knob in the shape of a demon with two emerald green eyes. Bright red pentagrams were embedded into its wood. These pentagrams were so red they seemed to be filled with blood, ready to bleed at any moment, almost pulsing from their plumpness. She reached down for the handle, deep breaths filled with dread ran through her lungs, as her heart drummed a loud terror beat inside her chest. She turned the handle and opened the door, which was so heavy that it took two hands and a healthy dose of sweat to move.

Her heart sank once the door was wide open because there he stood, the man who had brought her here the night before. Her cloudy memory had finally opened up, spilling forth the information. It was the bar where they had met, the bar where he had laid on his charms, the bar where he had asked her to go home with him, the bar was the last memory she had before waking up in this mysterious place. And she was sure of another thing, he wasn’t the same man who had picked her up. That dashing handsome young man with the long black hair and dusty blue eyes, who stood at least six foot five, and was easily a foot taller than her was now nowhere to be seen. Instead of the young man dressed in modern clothes, here stood an ancient older man in dated black three piece suit with a cape tied around his neck. The cape fell to somewhere near the middle of his back. It was black to match the suit, but the interior of it was as red as the pentagrams on the door. His cologne wafted through the air as he stood there, an ancient smell of High Karate.

A 1 Day Freebie: A Vampire at Christmas

A short story about a Vampire who uses his riches and immortal skills to bring joy to those in need during the Christmas Season.

+

A naked, artificial, green Christmas tree (replaced every season) stood in one corner of this tomb; and there were no ornaments on this tree, no garland of any kind. The coffin he slept in was decorated with thick silver tinsel, and it draped and wrapped itself around this orifice of death like a shiny snake. Talan dared not play Christmas music because he was afraid of drawing attention to himself. People might discover his hiding place if they heard music playing up from somewhere deep in the Earth, no matter how far into the woods he made his lair. The tree and the decorated coffin were more than enough to keep him in a Christmas mood.

Once inside, Lisa turned around and watched the dead and decaying world disappear behind a solid gate of silver metal. Attached to the gate was a large green Christmas wreath, sparkling with silver and red tinsel. She turned back to the front, and looked at each home (though hard to see clearly in the snow) decorated in muted decorations. Doors and lawns and roofs all displayed some kind of Christmas cheer, and in the center of this peaceful oasis sat the largest Christmas tree she had ever seen. It was kept upright with wooden spikes and strings, and sitting atop of it was a large yellow star spinning like a lighthouse beacon. She looked from the tree to their path, and saw small bags depicting Christmas scenes lining their way. Inside each bag was a small candle, flickering bright in the snow and cold. She flicked her eyes from the candles to the baby carrier and the baby asleep inside of it, kept warm and safe by Mike’s coat draped over her, thankful Mike had given it up so her baby could rest comfortably.

When the vampire finished his feast, washed in a euphoric afterglow, Talan had but a few drops of blood left in his body. The vampire leaned down, and kissed Talan on the lips, a kiss that lingered for a second or two. While their lips were locked, the vampire punctured his tongue with one of his fangs, and then slipped that tongue into Talan’s mouth. He let the blood flow for a minute or so, and then unlocked the kiss.

Talan gurgled and choked, came to, swallowing the vampire’s blood even though he wasn’t sure he knew what he was swallowing.

The vampire stood up, and looked down at Talan. “Welcome to immortality. Sun will be up in a few hours, better make for the nearest crypt,” the vampire replied, and then was gone in a flash, racing back to his castle deep in the forest away from the world at large.

“Come out Gavin! Nobody has to get hurt if you just come out!” Ernie yelled through the only window that found a home in the small building.

There was silence from inside as Gavin held the shotgun tight in his hands and let the sweat drip from his head. His eyes were darting back and forth like a cocaine addict who had been up for way too long. He was frantic at the thought of what the trees would do if he wasn’t there to feed them. He had protected this town the last two months, and he wasn’t about to stop now, not even if it meant dying on one of his favorite holidays.

A 1 Day Freebie: A Zombie Christmas

This short story is about three men who risk life and limb in a Zombie Apocalypse in order to bring happiness to surviving kids on Christmas Morning.

+

Mike Beem lowered his rifle, put his right eye on the scope, and closed his left eye. The zombie he was about to shoot was an ugly sucker. From what Mike could tell, this zombie used to be a man around five foot five or six, maybe seven. Hell, he couldn’t tell the exact height from just a tiny scope. Its suit was disheveled, full of dirt and blood (it looked fresh, a recent feast perhaps), and half of his face was gone. This zombie was currently investigating Mike’s Santa Claus and reindeer display. The zombie was studying it like he knew what it was or remembered what it was.

Mike leaned down, and looked out the peep hole as a zombie shambled down off the porch. There were four of them out there. All zombied up, rotting, bloody, fresh from death, and they were all dressed like carolers and holding caroling books. One had his book upside down, two of them had theirs sideways, and the smart one, the one who knocked, had his right side up.

Mike didn’t put up anything with lights in it or on it. There were no lights around the house. He had muted decorations so they wouldn’t attract attention. He didn’t know why or how the carolers had found him, but they did.

Mike began to smile, as the zombies grunted out Jingle Bells and moved on to Silent Night. He didn’t know if he should shoot them or let them be. He stood there a moment and thought about it, listening to the comical tune coming from the mouths of those zombies. He went over to the window and looked out onto the lawn. Their singing was attracting other zombies, so he knew he had to take them out, funny as it was, he had to do it.

New Cover and A Free Read – sHe

she2

. . . Sara Railz stepped off the bus, and moved with a somber quiet ease up to the door that led into her apartment. It was a simple door, red with gold trim.

She held her key up to the lock, using the street lamp as her light.

She paused.

A noise nearby.

Sara turned towards it, brown eyes studying the shadows, searching the dark for any signs of movement.

Seeing nothing, she turned back to her door.

“Silly girl can’t even come home from work without worrying about someone or something jumping out at you,” she replied, as she pushed the key into the lock.

She unlocked the door, and slid inside to her safe and comfy home.

In the shadows, where Sara had looked moments ago, something made a slight growl.

It was time for estrogen . . .

The three men sat huddled in the cold, waiting and watching the mall parking lot, back packs on their back, guns ready to kill.

It looked like a hopeless nightmare.

There were a lot of zombies shuffling around the open ground, some going into the mall, some coming out. Many of them coming out of the mall were carrying shopping bags as if they had spent this day doing last minute Christmas shopping.

“Dawn of the Dead much,” Fred replied.

“Original or remake?” Mike asked.

“Original, of course.”

“I don’t think I can do this.” Jim gripped his shotgun a little tighter to his chest. Fear ran across him like a freight train. Panic set in. He had avoided situations like this, and now he was about to throw all of that away for a few kids he didn’t even know. “This was a noble idea, Mike, sounded better before I got here; but I think I better get on back home.”

A boy lost. A family desperate. It’s Christmas in a Zombie Apocalypse and Mike Beem is once again aiming for another Holiday miracle. His goal this year isn’t toys for the kids in the neighborhood. Mike (thinking quickly) stepped sideways, and tripped the first zombie, who stumbled and tumbled down the steps, cracking and breaking all sorts of things in its fall. The second zombie (a lady that once wore a shapely dark dress that was now covered in filth) pushed Mike up against the rail and pinned him there. Mike managed to get the blade up in time to push it easily into her soft skull. He pulled the blade out, and lots of plump maggots oozed out of the wound, along with a healthy dose of blood. The zombie fell towards him, and he used her light dead body as a battering ram against the third zombie, who was currently trying to attack Mike from behind the woman. He shoved her into the male zombie (wearing construction clothes), and with all of his strength managed to dump both zombies over the rail. They crashed hard onto the ground in a puff of white powdery snow.

Mike quickly moved down to the zombie he had tossed down the steps. It (dressed in shorts and a “We have fun at the funhouse t-shirt”) moved and clawed at him, but with a busted body all it could do was reach out. Mike quickly pushed the blade into its skull, as the construction worker zombie came up on him. They tumbled to the ground. Mike underneath, the zombie on top, gnashing and mashing those discolored broken teeth inches from his flesh.

E-Book Review: Vampire Miami

51sgrgzttl

“I was surprised by how quickly I was sucked up into this story. It moved quick and fast and the book had a very interesting premise that worked. I would recommend this to anyone who likes Vampires or just a solid ride that never lets up. There were a few errors here and there, but the story was so strong that they didn’t slow down my reading experience. I now want to read the rest in the series. I have to find out what happens next. Thumbs up. Nice job Phil.”

Dawn stopped at the edge of the parking lot. What she saw in front of her was an apocalyptic nightmare. It was a picture of mass panic frozen in a time of chaos.

The parking lot looked like a war zone–cars burned to metal bodies, cars crashed together, cars turned over, shopping carts everywhere and in all kinds of positions, (food and supplies in these carts long since looted), and bodies, lots and lots of dead bodies. Most of them had been laying out here rotting in the hot sun for far too long, and they were now decayed and gooey, slipping back into the Earth one second at a time.

She closed her eyes, held the gold cross on a chain around her neck, prayed, and then crossed the parking lot.

They reached the Refugee Center that was just behind the massive evergreen. It was a small building with two windows and a door, all decorated with Christmas cheer. Lisa thought it was probably a club house or sales center before the zombies took over the world.

Mike ushered them up to the door, opened it, and hurried them inside.

Leaning against a 1949 black Mercury was a man who looked just like James Dean. He wore his hair kind of long and wavy. He had on jeans rolled up at the ankles, a black leather coat with a white tee shirt underneath it, and a pair of black Chuck Taylor sneakers on his feet. He was smoking a cigarette, and staring off into the warm North Carolina night. His eyes were unblinking, frozen, and focused.

“Do you know who you’re talking to?” The brunette woman asked. She wanted so badly to stand up for her man who, at the moment, was currently trying to form words.

“I have an idea,” the stranger replied, as he inhaled on his cigarette, blew out the smoke, and then placed it back on his lips, dangling it ever so.

“You should show some respect then,” the brunette woman replied.

“Are you going to let that little girl speak for you, or are you going to do it yourself? Real men wouldn’t hide behind a skirt,” the stranger replied, eyes still focused forward. He stood there just as calm as could be with the full moon-light casting a ghostly glow across his entire body.

The Lot vs. The Lot – Which cover do you prefer?

My current cover for The Lot looks like this.

TheLot

A

I like it and it conveys the story very well, but the cover doesn’t want to load in some places (file too big) so to amend this I made another one.

thelot2

B

There is something about this one I like even more than the original. The white, the green, the red, it just seems to scream Christmas. I’ve thought about taking away the Alien head, but I’m not sure if I should or not.

Now, here’s where you come in. Choose A or B and send me an email with that answer (atothewr@gmail.com). I will send you The Lot in the format of your choosing (MOBI, PDF, EPUB) free of charge. No strings attached. If you want to leave a review, great, but you don’t have to. This is just a gift to all my followers who put up with me each and every day. Thanks again for reading.

Just to be safe, Dawn stepped up to the man lying over the conveyor belt. A soft pop from the gun, and the man’s lifeless head exploded in cold grey dust.

Dawn stood there a moment, surveyed with her ears, listening for shuffling, listening for anything that disturbed the peace and quiet. She heard something. It was faint, coming from the rear of the store. She would have to keep her wits about her, as she tried to find food that was still edible for a Thanksgiving feast.

She stepped past the dead man lying over the conveyor belt, and paused in front of the candy section, which hadn’t been looted. Dawn grabbed a bag of hard candies and ripped it open. She started to munch on the rainbow of flavor, as she slung her backpack off her back and dropped it onto the conveyor belt. She unzipped the big front pocket, opened it wide, and emptied the candy shelf into it–making sure to get only candy that wouldn’t melt.

Dawn finished up her candy treat, took a pause, reloaded her gun, and gulped down a bottle of water. When she felt rested, she zipped up the big front pocket on her backpack and slung the bag onto her back.

It was another perfect head shot. The zombie hit the pavement, and he didn’t move. The noise from the gun had stirred up more of them, so Mike had to get to his display, fix it, and then get back.

So, Mike grabbed Rudolph out of the dead zombie’s hands, and put the display back in order. He quickly made his way back to the house, where nothing was stirring, not even a mouse. He shot a few zombies with his pistol as he ran across the yard, climbed back up the rope ladder and found his place on the balcony.

He turned on his boom box.

Perry Como flooded the air with Christmas cheer.

The zombies were getting restless, so Mike decided it was time to even out the herd. It was pretty easy shooting.
