fleshzombies2

When Mike Beem’s community is savagely attacked, he must exact revenge on those who wronged him. He must put aside all the good he has ever accomplished in order to become someone else. A man without a moral compass. A man without right or wrong. A man who is a cold blooded killer. Will he get his justice or will he die trying? The answers lie within the pages of this short story.

It is the start of the Walking Dead this weekend, and though I have soured on the show (thanks Negan!) it still doesn’t mean I can’t get in on the excitement. I have decided to offer all of my zombie based stories free on Saturday and Sunday. Follow the links above to get your copy of the story of your choosing. Thanks again for reading this blog.

Mike raced down the street towards Benny’s white two room house, black combat boots smacking the ground underneath him. The gear he was wearing was slowing his pace, so he moved as fast as he could. Thankful he was at least wearing camo pants today. Their fabric was loose, cool, and comfortable.

When he reached the house, he slowed his pace, and moved up to the gate. It was hanging open, so he stepped through and made his way up the sidewalk to the porch. Two zombies (a man and a woman) on his left caught his attention. They had their arms around each other, swinging in the porch swing like lovers lost in love. He shot them both with two quick head shots before they could stand. They tumbled to the floor in a heap, and laid there unmoving side by side. Their weird zombie love thing now extinguished.

Mike turned to face the door, which was hanging open. The sun may have been shining, but it was dark inside the house. He took out his flashlight, put it into his mouth, cocked his gun, and stepped into the black.

Dusk was settling in the world around them, the snow falling as heavy as it’d fallen all day, and little did they know, zombies were starting to move in.

“Eric, can you stop? My feet feel weird,” Bobby replied, as he leaned against a car. The four occupants inside of the car were partially eaten and frozen.

Eric stopped and put the carrier down. The cat let out a soft meow as it sat there and watched the scene unfold. In the dim light, Eric knelt down and looked at Bobby’s feet. He’d given Bobby some extra clothes for the walk – a warm hat for his head and ears, gloves, and another sweat shirt. They’d gotten his body warm, but forgot about his feet. The tennis shoes Bobby was wearing were soaked through, and it was obvious that the feet needed some immediate warmth. It would be hard to contend with frost bite in a world like this.

“How long has it been?”

“A while.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I didn’t want to slow us down.”

From somewhere out in the growing darkness they heard a moan. It was distant, but it was still a sound they didn’t need to hear. The cat arched his back and let out a screech.

Friday Freebies (9/16/2016): AWOL: A Character Lost Part 1

AWOL1

How far will he go to get home?

Will Vampires, Werewolves, Monsters, and Aliens deter him?

What will he endure to find his family?

Acclaimed author Anthony Renfro has a problem. As his fans wait anxiously for his next release, a character he has created tumbles out of the pages of his book and comes to life. With no clear story or plot in Anthony’s head, he must work together with this character in order to find out what story he belongs in before the critics and fans come pounding on Anthony’s door. AWOL: A Character Lost is a horror/science fiction novel about an author’s worst fears come to life.

Outside in the night-time sky there was a round silver disc, flying fast, in landing mode. Its destination was Earth, and it wouldn’t be long before it set down somewhere close to the cabin the character was now building a fire in.

*

The fire cracked and popped as the character warmed himself in front of it. He took off his coat and did another glance around the room. The familiarity with everything was just eerie. Had he been here before? Come to think of it, how did he get here? His brain was jumbled. Not only could he not remember this place, which he felt like he should, but he also couldn’t remember where he had come from. How had he come to stand in front of this fireplace enjoying this nice warm fire? He had no idea.

He took a seat on the couch and dropped his head into his hands. He heard a rustling from inside the bathroom (the one to the left of the fireplace), and then he heard a commode flush. He stood up, and looked at the door.

Someone was in there.

The character slipped back into the small kitchen with the humming fridge (which also reflected a decade long since past) and waited.

The door handle started to turn.

A pumpkin.

An uncarved giant orange-brown pumpkin.

Samantha looked at Ben and he looked at her. They both then looked up towards the window, feeling watched. The scarecrow was looking in on them, unmoving, unblinking. It just stared with its glowing green eyes.

Ben scurried backwards across the bed, pushing chunks of glass into his back and butt. He never felt the pain as he dropped onto the floor and raced for his shorts.

Samantha looked from the scarecrow to the pumpkin on the floor when she started to smell something burning. Her eyes widened as the pumpkin transformed in front of her.

A flash of fire and two triangular eyes appeared. Another flash of fire, and a large open jagged mouth appeared. Then three little black creatures, naked, sexless, and covered in scales crawled forth from the newly opened portals in the pumpkin. They hopped down onto the floor and looked up at the scarecrow. It nodded towards Ben, who had somehow managed to get his underwear on and nothing else.

A ZOMBIE CHRISTMAS

Mike Beem lowered his rifle, put his right eye on the scope, and closed his left eye. The zombie he was about to shoot was an ugly sucker. From what Mike could tell, this zombie used to be a man around five foot five or six, maybe seven. Hell, he couldn’t tell the exact height from just a tiny scope. Its suit was disheveled, full of dirt and blood (it looked fresh, a recent feast perhaps), and half of his face was gone. This zombie was currently investigating Mike’s Santa Claus and reindeer display. The zombie was studying it like he knew what it was or remembered what it was.

“Don’t pick up Rudolf. Don’t,” Mike replied to himself.

The zombie leaned over and picked up Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.

That did it.

You see, the biggest problem was this. When you messed with Rudolph, you screwed up the whole display. All the reindeer were attached by string; and that string led into the hands of Santa, who was glued by his butt to the sleigh he was sitting in. When the zombie picked up Rudolph, the rest of the display just went into disarray.

Mike didn’t want to shoot the zombie just yet, because if he fell forward then it would crush the display all together. Mike waited until the zombie was trying to walk away with Rudolph, shambling off, munching on the plastic reindeer, and the display dragging behind him.

Bam!

Perfect head shot, display still safe.

 THE LIVING SAND

The waves roared onto the shore, pounding and tearing apart the coastline. The night was calm, cloudless, but the waves seemed to be agitated and angry, like they were being stirred up by a hurricane.

The moon above them painted the beach with a soft light, but this light was unnatural. It was too bright, too shiny, and too yellow.

The grains of sand under their feet seemed to move as they stepped on it, and they were just a little too white, a little too squirmy to be just regular grains of sand.

The cliff walls seemed to be wet with something dark, blood or water, who could really tell, and Seth thought he saw things lurking just under the creepy overhanging trees with the limbs that seemed to be reaching down towards them. Was that yellow eyes, lots and lots of yellow eyes staring down from up above?

Seth turned away before he lost his nerve and bolted for home. He turned his face up to the sea breeze, and let it cool his hot clammy skin.

JOYRIDE

When Mike reached the garage door, he stopped, because he couldn’t hear or see his buddy. “Vin, where are you?” He asked, leaning into the garage.

Vin jumped out of hiding, banging two pieces together of the loudest thing he could find.

Mike, of course, jumped. “You dumb son of a bitch! You nearly gave me a heart attack! Don’t you ever do that again!”

“Wuss,” Vin replied, smiling.

“Aren’t you afraid someone will hear that?” Mike asked, remembering how terrified Vin had once been of getting caught.

Vin shrugged it off as no big deal, and turned his attention to the car.

“What do you think?” Mike asked.

Through the curtainless windows, the full moonlight fell onto the car like a spotlight, giving it a ghost-like glow. This light made it look meaner, more evil, like it could almost drive itself. It was painted black with a red racing stripe running from hood to trunk, and each tire had white lettering on the side.

Zombie 2 - High Resolution

Exp: Mike checked his lawn decorations to see if they were unharmed. His Santa Claus and reindeer display with Rudolph leading the team, the cross on the front lawn, the elves and Santa’s work shop, the nativity scene, and various candy canes he had spread throughout the yard were all still safe.

Now, most people would ask, why? Why worry about lawn decorations when the rest of the world was suffering through a Zombie Apocalypse?

It made Mike feel good inside, and he hoped that whoever saw it would feel a bit of that joy as well. That is why he did it. It might be a zombie-filled world, but he still hoped a lawn full of Christmas decorations would bring some kind of cheer to this dreary holiday season. It was the first Christmas since the zombie invasion. It was the first Christmas without his family. It was the least he could do.

Mike looked down at the four caroling zombies, as they went into a rendition of Frosty the Snowman, the year’s first snow only a couple of inches underneath their feet. The group, of course, was led by that one smart zombie. He was leading them and pointing to their books even though none of them turned a single page. He was the one that started grunting out the tune to Frosty just like the songs before, and the other zombies just sort of harmonized with his lead.
