Cover Song Saturday: Jimmy Buffett – Mexico

An even draw. I honestly think they both are great. I couldn’t choose between them. They both just have such a good easy breezy vibe. Either one will put you in a positive mood and take you away for a bit.

So, which do you prefer?

The original or the cover.

Cover Song Saturday: Johnny B. Goode – Peter Tosh vs. Judas Priest

I think we all know the original. It is a classic that can’t be touched. No artist could ever cover it and make it better than Chuck Berry.

The original is great. I’ve stated that already, so let’s move onto the covers. Both of which are unique in their own way.

First, Peter Tosh

Second, Judas Priest

I love Heavy Metal, proud to say that, but I have to give the nod this time to Peter Tosh. He didn’t just remake this song louder and heavier like Judas Priest, but he took the song and made it his own. The reggae beat and the new lyrics splashed throughout just gives this song a totally different feel and it works from start to finish.

So, which do you prefer?

Peter Tosh or Judas Priest

Cover Song Saturday: Jimmy Buffett – Southern Cross

The Original

The Cover

Jimmy’s version is just better. It has more life and more energy, and it has long been one of my concert favorites. I don’t know how many times I’ve just gone bug nuts when he started to play this song. I knew this would be a lopsided one for me today, a biased one if you want to say it that way, but I had to post his cover of this song. It is just such a great cover.

So, which do you prefer?

The original or the cover.

Movie Review Haiku: History of the Eagles

Classic Eagles songs

Gentle, smooth, takes you away

Sets your mind at ease

+

(5 Stars out of 5)

I just finished watching this Music Documentary on Netflix. If you have that streaming service you should stop reading, and head on over there now. This is a fascinating watch that showcases the Eagles career in great detail. I knew a lot about them, but this documentary really shines a light on what this band was like from the inside and out. I can’t recommend this one enough. It has put me back in an Eagles mood once again, and honestly that mood isn’t hard to get back into once you start listening to their music. Such a great band that gave us so many great songs. I will shut up now.

So, Eagles fan or not? Spill it below.

Cover Song Saturday: Tim McGraw – Tiny Dancer

The Original

The Cover

So, which do you prefer?

I’m going with Tim’s version on this one. It is modern, updated, and smoother than the original. I also feel like Elton’s version (along with Elton himself) is just played out. His music doesn’t seem to resonate as strongly these days as he when he was popular. You Elton fans out there may disagree with me, but it is just the way I feel.

Cover Song Saturday – Justin Moore: Home Sweet Home

The original

The cover version

So, which do you prefer?

The original hands down for me. It not only takes me back to my teen years, but this song just sounds better with the metal power behind. It just wasn’t meant to be a country song even though Justin Moore really gives it his all.

I don’t know if you have heard about this new blogging platform Niume or not. I stumbled on it a while back and just recently started posting to it. It is set up a lot like WordPress. I’ve posted some cover songs and other things over there. If you want to check it out, here’s the link: niume.com

Cover Song Saturday – Tori Amos: Raining Blood

I just can’t get enough of this song. Heavy, fast, and mean.

Now, the new version – simply haunting.

So, which is your favorite? I’m a Metalhead at heart, so Slayer’s version wins out for me. I do though respect Tori for putting a very eerie spin on what was already an intense song.

Cover Song Saturday – Godsmack: Rocky Mountain Way

Never been a gigantic fan of this song, and I’m not a big fan of Godsmack either. So, why post these songs you may ask? Because Godsmack’s version of this song is great. It really gives this song a punch I didn’t think it had. Listen to the original and then the remake. Tell me you don’t agree.

The original.

The cover version.

So, which is your favorite? I like the energy of the remake. It makes me want to listen to this song a lot more now. Guess that means I am leaning more to that one.

Cover Song Saturday (5/14/2016) – Disturbed: The Sound of Silence

I’ve been tinkering around about this in my head for a bit. A weekly post all about cover songs. I am sort of into that kind of thing. I love to hear a song I’ve heard a thousand times changed and transformed into something new or different. Case in point, this song. Disturbed really shows the darkness hidden inside this song that I think the original never managed to capture. “Silence like a cancer grows” is such a bleak sounding line, and Disturbed’s version of this song really highlights it. Here are the two songs. Compare and enjoy. If this is a hit I would like to start doing it once a week.

Incredible lyrics. Now, the new version.

So, which is your favorite?

I have to say that this new one just gives it a darker punch that really draws out those lyrics. I’m leaning towards the new one now, but I have and will always love the original.

Haiku – Perchance to Mosh

Metal in my veins

Filled up with adrenaline

Blood filled energy

+

I know this probably won’t be super popular, but the opening line to this Haiku popped into my head earlier today. I had to do something with it so I wrote this. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Slayer recently. A band that I kind of ignored for many years because I thought they were just too Satanic for my blood. I realized that if you just get past the album covers and album titles that they have some truly great metal to listen to. I honestly believe that out of all the speed and thrash metal bands out there that they are among the fastest I have ever heard. I’ll include “Hallowed Point” as an example for you. Warning, it isn’t for the faint of heart and it isn’t for those who can’t take blistering fast music. Nuff said. Let’s do this.

So, thoughts on Slayer? I know there are a few of you out there who can answer this.

A Musical Tribute for a Dead Blog

When I start a blog I’m all like this.

Then when I realize it just isn’t catching fire (no likes, no views, no comments) then it feels something like this.

Then finally when I reach my wall and throw in the towel it feels just like this.

With that said, another blog bites the dust. I had planned to move all my promotions and stuff over to my latest blog Crushing Self-Publishing, but it just wasn’t taking off. So, I am moving them all back here. It was also taking too much time and effort to run three blogs. One had to go, and the fledgling that wasn’t flying just had to be it. Good news for you. I have had some cool ideas over there that I am putting in here. Like Wednesday’s Quotes from famous authors and Friday freebies. I will also post my latest covers that I have designed from scratch. All of which you can see (along with a few other nuggets of goodness) by checking out the CRUSHING SELF-PUBLISHING section on the right hand side of this blog. Of course poetry will always be the primary focus here so do not worry. The other things are just side projects to help me keep the blog interesting.

So, how many blogs have you started and stopped? I think I might be in the double digits by now. This blog has been the only one that has sustained over the years.

Haiku – Mama Tried, Purple Rain

The doves are cooing

Singing out a mournful song

For those we have lost

+

I can honestly say that I wasn’t a gigantic Prince or Merle Haggard fan, but I did enjoy their music from time to time. I thought I might honor both of them today by posting a couple of their songs. Prince was everywhere when I was a teen growing up in the Eighties. It was hard not to turn on the radio and hear him. His death has shocked me more than Merle’s did for that reason, but I have enjoyed Merle’s music as well throughout my life time. Growing up in a small town with a dad who loved what would become classic country it is hard not to have heard a few of Merle’s songs. The music world has lost two more legends.
