Friday Freebie: Nightlight Tales

Nightlight Tales - High Resolution

A ZOMBIE NEW YEAR’S EVE: The city of Raleigh stood dark and lifeless behind a small single-story home where a thriving family once lived.

Sleet was falling hard, and bouncing off the silent objects of this now-broken world.

Three men hurried their way up the porch steps of this house, as the sun started to approach the horizon, choked out by dark grey clouds. The men looked at each other, and then one of them reached down and tested the front door handle.

Unlocked.

He slipped open the door to the sounds of a roaring fire, and bright light that covered the room where the woman they were chasing slept on a couch, unarmed.

The three men had been traveling up I-40 when they saw the girl walk up one of the exit ramps, a ramp that used to lead into the busy city of Raleigh. They hadn’t seen a prize like this in a long time, so they were more than happy to track her through the city filled with some of the thickest zombie hordes they had ever seen. They had fought their way through, just like the girl on the couch, surviving on instincts and human determination.

The man who had opened the door, turned back to his friends and gave them the okay sign, as he stepped into the warmth and out of the cold. The other two guys slithered in behind him.

Once inside, the door now closed and locked, they eyed their sleeping prize as she slept in peaceful slumber on the couch.

A New Cover and A Free Read (3/24 – 3/25): A Long Journey off a Short Pier (6 Horror Short Stories)

EXAMPLE FROM SHe:

“Yep . . . Just right there; haven’t moved her or touched her since the trouble last night,” the landlord replied, eyeballing her naked body on the bed.

“See something you want?” Nigel asked. “I’m sure she’s not going to fight you for it.”

The landlord slunk back from the young cop, who was a tough-looking guy. Probably still a rookie under that badge. The mousy little landlord with balding features and thick glasses had a few things he needed to keep hidden, so there was no point in getting the cops on his bad side; so he didn’t respond.

“Hey, Jerry! Why don’t you get this guy out of here? We can question him down at the station this afternoon. He’s creeping me out,” Nigel replied.

Jerry came into the room, (fat dude, more doughnuts than muscle) and ushered the landlord out.

“Tim! Wondering when you were going to drag in,” Nigel replied when he saw the detective walk into the room.

Tim looked down at the bed, and at Sara’s lifeless, naked body. He had known all three of the victims of this killer intimately, and now here lay the fourth, another one he had taken to bed on many occasions.

This cover was kind of thrown together when I first put it out. I found an image on Pixabay that I liked and when I put it into the cover creator on CreateSpace it looked like this.

A Long Journey

Honestly, it looks pretty good, but I decided to try to make it look a little better. I found another image, popped it into Gimp, and then came up with this.

LongJourney

I think it looks creepier now, and it does grab the eye. I also like the writing, and the black and white color. It just pops.

Thoughts. I would love to hear what you think about it.

You can get your free copy at the links below. Don’t have a Kindle, shoot me an email (atothewr@gmail.com) and I will send it to you in EPUB or PDF.

Thanks again for enjoying my work.

Review:

“The main strength and the thing I liked about this collection was the originality and just good entertaining stories. My favourite of the bunch was “Need to Feed” – it’s a kind of cross between The Magnificent Seven & Van Helsing. Quite a quirky story with plenty of monsters being shot in the head as good conquers evil. Also liked “Twenty Dollars” – quite a weird little story, and with no explanation given we just have to go along with it, which actually works in this case. Also “The Living Sand” – Two boys exploring a cave in the middle of the night generally leads to trouble, and here is no exception.”
