Tuesday Promotions (7/18/2017): Nightlight Tales (A Zombie Christmas)

5 out of 5 stars – Terrific plots and plenty of chills and thrills

13 tales of terror.

13 tales that will have you reaching for the nightlight before you go to bed tonight.

A Zombie Christmas

The three men sat huddled in the cold, waiting and watching the mall parking lot, back packs on their back, guns ready to kill.

It looked like a hopeless nightmare.

There were a lot of zombies shuffling around the open ground, some going into the mall, some coming out. Many of them coming out of the mall were carrying shopping bags as if they had spent this day doing last-minute Christmas shopping.

“Dawn of the Dead much,” Fred replied.

“Original or remake?” Mike asked.

“Original, of course.”

“I don’t think I can do this.” Jim gripped his shotgun a little tighter to his chest. Fear ran across him like a freight train. Panic set in. He had avoided situations like this, and now he was about to throw all of that away for a few kids he didn’t even know. “This was a noble idea, Mike, sounded better before I got here; but I think I better get on back home.”

Mike grabbed Jim by the shirt, as he started to stand up. Jim landed on his butt on the cold snowy ground a second later. “This is no time to be backing out! We need you here. We need you now.”

“Why do you need me?”

“What do you mean?”

“You and Fred can handle it. I’ve seen you shoot. I would just get in your way. I can promise you that.”

Mike looked Jim in the eye, while Fred waited anxiously to go . . .

Pre-Order Thursday (7/13/2017): Zombie Beach and The Mike Beem Chronicles

*NEW SHORT STORY NOW AVAILABLE*

For the next 8 Thursdays I plan to post a snippet of my new short story Zombie Beach. It is currently available for Pre-Order on Amazon and will release on September 1st. It is the closing chapter in The Mike Beem Chronicles. If you haven’t read the others in the series do not worry. I am also releasing on September 1st the complete collection of Mike Beem stories. So, without further delay, here is the cover for Zombie Beach and below you will find a small sample of the story along with the links to Pre-Order it.

This short story is told in two parts.

Part 1: Mike and Captain

On the Coast, Mike runs into an old Sea Captain and they form an instant bond. Mike learns of Captain’s boat, his son and daughter-in-law. Captain is desperate to get off Carolina Beach, but there is a problem (and it is a big problem) the town is swarming with zombies. Mike decides to help the old man fight his way through the hordes in order to gain safe passage on his boat.

Part 2: Mike and Myrtle Beach

Alone again. Mike finds an old motel on the South Carolina coast and decides to call it home. While rebuilding his life and motel he meets some new friends, fights off countless numbers of zombies, and settles into his new life by the sea.

Mike Beem lowered his rifle, put his right eye on the scope, and closed his left eye. The zombie he was about to shoot was an ugly sucker. He was currently hanging ten on a tall gigantic wave. The zombie surfer was riding a long board, wearing red flowered swimming trunks, and a tee shirt with a dirty smiley face on it. His shirt and shorts along with his thin long blonde hair were flapping in the breeze as he sailed down the wave at top speed.

Poof!

The zombies head exploded leaving only a ragged stump shooting blood up into the air. The headless body surfed for a moment or two before tumbling into the crashing wave.

“Why’d you do that?” A voice behind Mike asked, an older voice full of age and salty wisdom. He sounded like a man who had sailed the sea for most of his adult life.

Mike turned around to face him, lowering his rifle.

“Just saying, he wasn’t hurting anybody,” the old guy replied, leaning on a wooden cane with a silver metal ball on the top of it. His long white hair and soft white beard reminded Mike of his own granddad who had died when he was just a boy.

“I found this silencer, and I just wanted to try it out,” Mike replied, reloading his gun. “Besides, one dead zombie is one less zombie in this world as far as I’m concerned. Don’t care if it’s a threat or not.’”

“Got a name, son?”

“Mike Beem, you?”

“Most folks call me Captain, and I’m fine with it,” the old guy replied, as a cool blast of air pushed back his long hair. “Storm’s moving in. Going to be a nasty one.”

“I had the same feeling,” Mike replied, scanning the late afternoon sky filling up with grey storm clouds.

“That your truck?” Captain asked, nodding towards the 1955 Chevy.

“It was,” Mike replied, turning to face the machine, which was currently sitting perfectly positioned in a parking spot. Pieces of zombies where sticking out of the smoldering radiator, including one complete head with the eyes still looking around, mouth chomping away. “Parking lot was full of corpses. I had to get down to the beach somehow.”

“Guess so,” Captain replied, thinking this Mike guy wasn’t exactly all there. “How about a hot meal and a place to rest your head?”

Mike looked up and down the empty beach, across the decaying splintered boardwalk and the buildings now falling into disrepair. His decision was a quick easy one to make. “Sure, lead the way, Captain,” he replied, climbing down off the bench he’d been standing on. He slung the rifle over his shoulder, picked up his small bag of personal items, and then set off after the old man.

If you haven’t read the rest of the Chronicles you can get all of them along with this story at the links below. What are the Mike Beem Chronicles? The Mike Beem Chronicles are a series of short stories that I wrote involving a character named Mike Beem. They are stories about hope, survival, and people trying to keep humanity alive in a world filled with the living dead. Descriptions for all six stories in this collection flow below. Enjoy.

A Zombie Thanksgiving: A short story about a woman who risks life and limb in a Zombie Apocalypse in order to keep the Thanksgiving tradition alive.

A Zombie Christmas: This short story is about three men who risk life and limb in a Zombie Apocalypse in order to bring happiness to surviving kids on Christmas Morning.

A Zombie New Year’s Eve: This short story is about Becky and Joe who are separated in a Zombie Apocalypse and risk life and limb in order to reunite for their New Year’s Eve kiss.

A Zombie Christmas 2: A boy lost. A family desperate. It’s Christmas in a Zombie Apocalypse and Mike Beem is once again aiming for another Holiday miracle. His goal this year isn’t toys for the kids in the neighborhood. His goal this time is trying to save one small life so another family doesn’t have to suffer the way he suffered.

Flesh for the Zombies:
When Mike Beem’s community is savagely attacked, he must exact revenge on those who wronged him. He must put aside all the good he has ever accomplished in order to become someone else. A man without a moral compass. A man without right or wrong. A man who is a cold blooded killer. Will he get his justice or will he die trying? The answers lie within the pages of this short story.

Zombie Beach: Mike Beem has given it all up and run off to live by the beach. Life down on the coast isn’t all that it should be. Days of lying in the sun are replaced with brutal survival. Mike does his best to not only survive, but to rebuild a life among the ruins of these beach side towns.

Cover Reveal and A Free Read: Vampires and Zombies: The Undead Collection

I’ll be honest with you, my original cover for this one stunk. I didn’t like it, but I wasn’t sure how to change it. I somehow wound up on a free trial of ADOBE images, and found this one. I thought that might work for this short story collection. That person standing by the street light could actually be a Vampire. Plus the reds and the blacks just popped. So, I added a fancy title and tag line and there you go. Do I love this one? No. I will probably change it in the future, but for now this is the best one this collection has ever had. You can grab it at the links below for free today (6/6).

Tuesday Promotions (7/4/2017): Nightlight Tales (The Living Sand)

5 out of 5 stars – Terrific plots and plenty of chills and thrills

13 tales of terror.

13 tales that will have you reaching for the nightlight before you go to bed tonight.

The Living Sand

Seth waited a moment outside of the cave, as he checked his scared nerves, and looked into the darkness in front of him. He could hear the drips and drops, the wet squishy sounds that only the interior of a cave can make while he stood there. He could also hear Junior’s tennis shoes smacking the hard-surfaced floor, echoing throughout the cave as he explored. Suddenly and without warning, the flashlight Junior had been holding went out; and Junior evaporated into the black.

“Junior!” Seth screamed. Nothing, just his own ghostly echo screaming back at him. He bit his lip, and trying not to think about Vampire Crypts or Werewolf Lairs or the Hammer Horror movies he and Junior liked to watch every Saturday, he stepped into the cool dark cave.

Junior launched out of the darkness in front of him the second Seth made his way inside. The flashlight was back on, the light pointed upwards making Junior’s face look like a creepy goblin at Halloween.

“Boo!” Junior screamed as Seth jumped backward, farting as he did. It was a fart that echoed throughout the cave. “Shit your pants. Frady cat. Bet you did. Hope mama packed some extra shorts for you,” he replied, laughing hysterically.

“Junior, you bastard, don’t you ever do that to me again! You just about gave me a heart attack.”

“Sorry man. I just couldn’t help it. You know how I get around little frady cats like you.” He punched Seth on the shoulder . . .

Tuesday Promotions (6/27/2017): Nightlight Tales (The Man from the Road)

5 out of 5 stars – Terrific plots and plenty of chills and thrills

13 tales of terror.

13 tales that will have you reaching for the nightlight before you go to bed tonight.

The Man from the Road

A fat, yellow, full moon filled the sky. It lit up the world, casting shadows everywhere; but what was that lurking in the shadows? Shapeless things with dark, red, shiny eyes–things that were watching a man, as he walked down a road, alone. This man ignored the shadow creatures the best he could, and tried to figure out where he was, and why he was here. He had no idea of how he had come to be on this road, in such a dead haunted place.

He started to walk forward, and something stopped him, abruptly.

He turned to his left, and across a nearby field he saw an explosive fire licking at the starry sky with a hell-filled red tongue. The fire seemed to taste the evil in the night, and burn brighter because of it.

The man trained his eyes on the fire, as if he was drawn to it by some unseen force; and then he saw them. There were people dancing around the fire, circling it, chanting out loud in a ritualistic way.

The man moved towards the field, ever so careful to stay out of the shadows and stay in the light; because whatever lurked in those shadows was creeping up to the edge of the black, waiting for the man to slip into the shadows by mistake. They would have him then, and they needed him because they lusted for just a taste of his warm, soft, human flesh.

The man slipped into a tangle of bushes that were basking in the glow of the moon, careful that he remained in the light, but hidden from the fire dancers. The thorns on the bush cut into him, but the man was so consumed by what he was seeing that he didn’t even notice the pain or the trickling blood. When this blood fell onto the ground, the earth he was standing on licked it up with a dark, evil, greed . . .

The stories in this chilling collection are as follows.

1. The Man from the Road: A man suddenly appears on a road. He’s lost, confused, no clue as to how he got there. He starts to walk and stops suddenly. There’s a bonfire in a field nearby. Blog Updates and Changes 2 and An Updated Cover for A Zombie Thanksgiving

I feel like I’ve been posting a bit too much lately, so I thought it might be nice to scale down a bit. This blog was meant for Haiku and Poetry, and most of you signed on for that. I hope those who did sign on for that are enjoying the new changes.

Anyway, starting this week I plan to change a few things in order to lighten the load on this blog and your inboxes (if you do get my updates in your inbox). Thursdays are now going to be my day to start posting a variety of things. Starting this week and next it will be two more of my cover reveals. After that, I will do some promoting on my latest releases (scheduled to come out in September), then start posting Cool Posters Thursday again (the last of the ones I have scheduled), and then close out the year with my Cheap Covers (that post will move off of Friday afternoons to Thursday mornings at 8). All of that will give those who follow me 5 scheduled posts a week – Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The poetry side of this blog is still going to be when the mood hits me, so that could be any hour, and day, any time of the week.

I also wanted to show you guys an updated cover for A Zombie Thanksgiving. I know last week I posted my latest cover for this short story. Well, James over at Go On Write decided to put his covers up for sale – 20 dollars until the end of June (if you need a cover then that is the place to get them). I managed to scrounge up twenty bucks from the dust and lint inside my pocket and below is the newest, latest, and officially final cover for A Zombie Thanksgiving. This short story now has a great eye-catching cover. What do you think?

To find out more about Jame’s secret sale click this link: www.goonwrite.com

Okay, that’s about it. Thanks again for working with me as I continue to evolve this blog.
