 EXP: It Sleeps at Dawn

The woman ran.

Where was she?

How did she get here?

She had no clue.

Confusion raced through her brain as her long blonde hair blew out behind her, her feet making their way down the thick red carpeted hall past large stained glass windows filled with colored moonlight. The stained glass windows stood 10 feet tall and 20 feet wide with an arch at the top and an upside down cross attached to each center. One window showed a Vampire as it crept out of a crypt on a moonlit night, another showed a Vampire tearing open the neck of a victim lying on a bed (complete with blood spray), and the last one showed a Vampire sitting on a throne while other Vampires worshiped at its feet. The throned Vampire was flinging blood on them from a naked female corpse it had lying across its lap . . .

Goodreads Giveaway – A Zombie Thanksgiving

(snazzy new cover this year)

+

She pushed the thoughts away, and walked over to the small door that employees and truckers used to use to enter the building. It was closed, but it had an electronic lock, which meant without power it wasn’t locked. She found a couple of non-broken pallets and leaned them against this door. Probably not enough to hold back a hungry zombie or a looter, but if they fell over the sound would at least alert her.

She dusted off her hands, and walked over to one of the loading bays, the only one with the door pushed up. She stood there, and looked out on the lot behind the building. There were two pickup trucks sitting silent and alone, smashed together in a head on collision. Supplies littered the ground. There were no bodies to be seen, which was a relief. She had seen enough people in death’s embrace to last her a lifetime, bout time she got a break.

While she stood there, she breathed in the fresh November air and scanned her eyes across the trees filled with dying color. She saw a zombie shuffle around the corner of the building dressed in fatigues, looking battle ready. There were no other shufflers with him.

She aimed, “Go in peace,” and fired.

The silencer on the gun poofed quietly. Another perfect head shot. The zombie fell over dead. His shuffling days were done.

Friday Freebies (10/21/2016): Bumps in the Night

bumps

EXCERPT: Gluten Free

Anyway, once again, you see pizza is the most lethal thing I can eat.  I was told that by my doctor. Cunt! She said pizza would kill me instantly, and I have avoided it till tonight.  Till this very night. But now, I’ve decided it is the best way to go out even if it is a fucking rip off. 20 damn bucks for extra cheese, thick crust, and meat – total bullshit! So my suicide will be self-inflicted, but it won’t be the way most people opt out, cash in the check so to speak – gun in mouth, brains splattered across the wall, hanging from a self-made noose, leaping off a tall building, you know the drill. My suicide will be a little more painful.  Wait, what’s that?  I hear a car pulling up outside, footsteps on the gravel parking lot, footsteps on the concrete stoop in front of my door, a knock, my death rattle.  Okay, folks, let me answer that door.

December the 23rd

Mike Beem lowered his rifle, put his right eye on the scope, and closed his left. The zombie he was about to shoot was an ugly sucker. He stood about five feet tall, and was currently surrounded by 10 other zombies – all of them dead, rotten, and ugly. They were currently trying to kill a frantic man standing on top of a closed dumpster. He was waving a dying flare at them, firing an empty pistol over and over again in hopes that magic bullets would appear in the chamber the longer he kept firing.

Bam!

The five foot tall zombie lost his head. Blood and maggot filled brains splattered a nearby wall and part of the dumpster. Mike aimed again, and another zombie lost its head, then another and another and another until all of them lay splattered on the ground in front of the dumpster.

The man on top of the trash bin looked up at the top of the building as the flare died out, and waved to his savior, who was currently in the shadows. Mike waved back as another zombie shambled down the alley towards the man. Mike slung the gun over his shoulder and shimmied down the escape ladder, landing on the ground inches behind the zombie – a woman with dirty entrails dragging out behind her. She turned to bite, and Mike shoved a knife into her skull. He pulled the blade out, wiping it off as he let her drop to the ground, and made his way over to the man on the dumpster.

Friday Freebies (10/14/2016): Nightlight Tales

Nightlight Tales - High Resolution

EXCERPT: The Man from the Road

The man stepped back. He had seen enough, fear had finally given him common sense. He knew he needed to run. He knew he needed to flee. Where to, though, and how quick? When he didn’t even know where he was or where he could go to be safe.

While he stood there a moment debating, his eyes and face shifted upwards. He noticed that the leaves of the trees above him and around him were singing a mystical chant, and moving in tune with the dancers. He also noticed that the trees themselves had started to sway and move just like the leaves connected to them.

He looked down, and he saw that the plants were dancing and humming as well. He flipped his eyes up to the road, and saw the rocks on the gravel road were now bouncing off of each other like they were in a mating dance, popping like popcorn.

He felt something brush his legs, stepped back from it, as the blades of tall grass he was standing in started to move and gyrate; and then he realized that even the dirt on the ground was now responding to this ritualistic chant.

Then the dance came to a sudden stop, and the world at large fell into a quiet eerie silence.

The man peered back through the bushes, his eyes alive with curiosity, thorns digging in, blood running free, the ground lapping it up.

Pre-Order: The Lot

TheLot

There was silence from inside as Gavin held the shotgun tight in his hands and let the sweat drip from his head. His eyes were darting back and forth like a cocaine addict who had been up for way too long. He was frantic at the thought of what the trees would do if he wasn’t there to feed them. He had protected this town the last two months, and he wasn’t about to stop now, not even if it meant dying on one of his favorite holidays.

“We have a few minutes of patience left! Then we are coming in Gavin whether you like it or not! Tonight is Christmas Eve! No one has to die!” Ernie yelled.

Gavin sucked in air, and found his breath. “I can’t leave the trees. You don’t know what they’re capable of. They will take over this town!”

The cops looked at Ernie, who looked at them.

He nodded.

EXP: A ZOMBIE THANKSGIVING

Dawn stopped at the edge of the parking lot. What she saw in front of her was an apocalyptic nightmare. It was a picture of mass panic frozen in a time of chaos.

The parking lot looked like a war zone–cars burned to metal bodies, cars crashed together, cars turned over, shopping carts everywhere and in all kinds of positions, (food and supplies in these carts long since looted), and bodies, lots and lots of dead bodies. Most of them had been laying out here rotting in the hot sun for far too long, and they were now decayed and gooey, slipping back into the Earth one second at a time.

She closed her eyes, held the gold cross on a chain around her neck, prayed, and then crossed the parking lot.

She stopped when she reached the double doors that led into the grocery store. Sunlight gleamed off what was left of the glass in the frame, shards on the ground twinkled like stars. Two zombies shuffled out of the store, heading in her tasty direction. Dead things. Rotten things. Been walking around for a long time now as a corpse things. A couple of quick pops of her gun and both of them went down hard. Perfect, clean, head shots. Blood splattered ground.

Friday Freebies (8/5/2016): A Zombie New Year’s Eve

I know you are shaking your head as you read this post, and saying to yourself-“Why are you offering this story free at this time of year?”

There are many reasons for this free promotion.

First, I finally have a cover for it that I think I’m sold on. I really do like the look of this one. What do you think?

NYE4

The reds, the blacks, it all flows together to make a very ominous looking cover. I think this cover will stand out not only at the holidays, but throughout the year.

Another reason why I am running this one free is because my new short story “The Lot” (about a Christmas Tree lot with bad stuff happening around it) has been included as a bonus short story. This will be the first time this one will be available for Kindle. It is currently running free on NIUME (if you want to read it).

So, today, you not only get a snazzy new cover, but a brand new bonus short story when you download this one for free.

Now, the description: this short story is about Becky and Joe who are separated in a Zombie Apocalypse and risk life and limb in order to reunite for their New Year’s Eve kiss.

EXP: A ZOMBIE NEW YEAR’S EVE

He heard noises inside the mud room and turned to face it. The zombies had arrived and were now finding their way in through the open window. It sounded like slabs of beef dropping onto the floor, as they fell into the room one by one. Seconds later, they started to paw at the door that led into the kitchen.

Joe decided he better get on with the exploration of the house, because he wasn’t sure how much time he really had. Something momentarily stopped him, caused him to freeze in mid-movement. He turned towards the sound. It was a rattle of silverware in one of the drawers, like someone was shuffling through them trying to find the right one to use for their meal.

He walked over to this drawer, opened it, and shined the light down. In the gloom of the room, he could see everything was in place, and as it should be. He closed the drawer (soft close), stepped out of the kitchen, and into a hallway.

He paused again when he heard the silverware rattle.

It was a bit louder this time.

“Happy thoughts Joe, happy thoughts,” he replied to himself, as he tried to make his brain think that the rattle was caused by the zombies in the mud room shaking the floors of the house, and not something else. Hard to do in a place this dark and spooky, but he managed to do it as he went back to his exploration.

EXP: THE LIVING SAND

Seth watched Junior disappear, no that’s not the right way to say it. He watched as Junior was swallowed up, like the strange portal just ate him whole, bones and all.

Seth kicked a few yellow rocks, found his courage and once again, followed along.

A white sand beach greeted his tennis shoes when Seth stepped through to the other side. He looked over at Junior, who was standing there looking out across the pristine blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean, eyes wide and staring.

Waves with white foamy breakers were crashing hard onto the shore, splashing water, breaking up the sand, as a bright orange sun hung high in a deep blue cloudless sky. The sky though, like the water, was richer in color on this side of the cave, so was the sand underneath their feet.

“Where are the people?” Seth asked, looking around, taking the flashlight from Junior. He turned it off, and put it into his back pack, the one they always used when they went exploring. The flashlight rested inside the bag with some beef jerky, candy, water, fake vomit and fake pee. “Should be lots of them here for such a nice day.”

Junior didn’t respond, as he eyeballed the area, and made a mental map of what he was seeing.

This beach was small and crescent shaped, tucked into three tall rock walls, one behind them, two on either side of them. These slick bare rock walls ran up into the sky, ending in sharp ledges filled with creepy overhanging trees, gnarled and leafless. Their limbs, like arms, reached down towards the boys . . .

Dusk was settling in the world around them, the snow falling as heavy as it’d fallen all day, and little did they know, zombies were starting to move in.

“Eric, can you stop? My feet feel weird,” Bobby replied, as he leaned against a car. The four occupants inside of the car were partially eaten and frozen.

Eric stopped and put the carrier down. The cat let out a soft meow as it sat there and watched the scene unfold. In the dim light, Eric knelt down and looked at Bobby’s feet. He’d given Bobby some extra clothes for the walk – a warm hat for his head and ears, gloves, and another sweat shirt. They’d gotten his body warm, but forgot about his feet. The tennis shoes Bobby was wearing were soaked through, and it was obvious that the feet needed some immediate warmth. It would be hard to contend with frost bite in a world like this.

The Dead of Winter

Morning arrived – cloudless and sunny. Its warm rays shining on the new snow. The men were sound asleep inside the dark truck as a noise in the distance, faint enough not to wake them, stirred the world. It was the cat who responded to it first. He got up off the floor, stretched, scratched, and tried to find a way to look out. He wanted to see what was making that noise. He paced and moved, walking over Eric as he did. Eric stirred, but he was sleeping one off so he didn’t budge.

The cat walked over and sniffed the sealed double doors in the back and pawed at them to no avail. The cat made its way back across the small space to the door that led out of the room and into the cab, pawing at the door, but it didn’t move. He tried a few more times before finally giving up. The cat was really getting agitated now, but there wasn’t a thing he could do about it. He knew he had to wake the men, and he knew that if he didn’t this could spell trouble. He began to paw at Eric’s face as the noise got closer and closer. Eric didn’t stir so the cat started meowing. It was a last resort, but his instincts told him that was the thing to do.

Eric woke up slowly and shook the cobwebs free as the cat got quiet. “What the hell do you want?” Eric’s ears picked up on the noise. “What the hell is that?”

Eric turned towards the wall, and all he could see was metal. He got up and made his way to the door that led into the cab. He pushed it open and stepped inside. The cold air of the cab sent chills down his back, his breath white as he inhaled and exhaled.

He stood there a moment and listened. The noise was coming from the passenger’s side. He turned to look out the window, but it was covered with a heavy layer of snow. He climbed over the seat and tried to open it, but the snow was so heavy and thick against it that it wouldn’t budge. He tried the door handle, and he found the door unable to budge as well.

A ZOMBIE CHRISTMAS

Mike Beem lowered his rifle, put his right eye on the scope, and closed his left eye. The zombie he was about to shoot was an ugly sucker. From what Mike could tell, this zombie used to be a man around five foot five or six, maybe seven. Hell, he couldn’t tell the exact height from just a tiny scope. Its suit was disheveled, full of dirt and blood (it looked fresh, a recent feast perhaps), and half of his face was gone. This zombie was currently investigating Mike’s Santa Claus and reindeer display. The zombie was studying it like he knew what it was or remembered what it was.

“Don’t pick up Rudolf. Don’t,” Mike replied to himself.

The zombie leaned over and picked up Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.

That did it.

You see, the biggest problem was this. When you messed with Rudolph, you screwed up the whole display. All the reindeer were attached by string; and that string led into the hands of Santa, who was glued by his butt to the sleigh he was sitting in. When the zombie picked up Rudolph, the rest of the display just went into disarray.

Mike didn’t want to shoot the zombie just yet, because if he fell forward then it would crush the display all together. Mike waited until the zombie was trying to walk away with Rudolph, shambling off, munching on the plastic reindeer, and the display dragging behind him.

Bam!

Perfect head shot, display still safe.

Wednesday’s Quotes (5/18/2016): Famous Words from Famous Writers – Stephen King

“Even a zombie lurching through the night can seem pretty cheerful compared to the existential comedy/horror of the ozone layer dissolving under the combined assault of a million fluorocarbon spray cans of deodorant.”

 THE LIVING SAND

The waves roared onto the shore, pounding and tearing apart the coastline. The night was calm, cloudless, but the waves seemed to be agitated and angry, like they were being stirred up by a hurricane.

The moon above them painted the beach with a soft light, but this light was unnatural. It was too bright, too shiny, and too yellow.

The grains of sand under their feet seemed to move as they stepped on it, and they were just a little too white, a little too squirmy to be just regular grains of sand.

The cliff walls seemed to be wet with something dark, blood or water, who could really tell, and Seth thought he saw things lurking just under the creepy overhanging trees with the limbs that seemed to be reaching down towards them. Was that yellow eyes, lots and lots of yellow eyes staring down from up above?

Seth turned away before he lost his nerve and bolted for home. He turned his face up to the sea breeze, and let it cool his hot clammy skin.

Do you want a free copy of The Dead of Winter?

I honestly just feel like spilling out hate upon hate towards Amazon’s new EBook Giveaways. The main reason is that if you don’t get enough people to enter then the prize goes unclaimed. That just seems so unfair to me to those who entered the contest. If 1 or all 250 people have put in their time and effort to follow you and join this contest then someone should get rewarded no matter how many have entered. I love Amazon for all they have done for self-published artists, but I don’t like the way they are handling their EBook Giveaways. I think there is a lot more tweaking to be done before this is the perfect system it needs to be. Don’t you think?

Anyway, the contest for The Dead of Winter has ended and the prize has once again gone unclaimed. Frustrated by this of course, but I thought I might make a good out of a bad. If you would like to receive 3 free short stories and don’t mind leaving me a review then click the link below. Thanks again for reading and following this blog.

One More Time, Free to Read Today: A Zombie New Year’s Eve

NYE3

Yes, another cover change. Not a thousand percent sold on this one either, but it does have a nice bright look to it. Kind of feels like a celebration when you look at it. I think this one might be a keeper for a bit. I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

A zombie shambled up onto the porch–an elderly woman with cat eye glasses, rotting from head to toe. Joe shot her right through the eye, shattering the glasses, and sending her sprawling back into the other zombies. This delayed their progress for a moment, as they had to find a way around the dead granny now laying across the porch steps.

Joe decided it was time to find a way inside and that hand to hand combat wouldn’t work against this massive horde of zombies. He took off towards the back, but somehow managed to trip over one of the expensive chairs on the porch. This sent him sprawling into the swing, which he fell into, and then off of. He lay on his back for a moment, as the swing moved wildly above him. He put his hand up to stop it, just as he heard a thump on the porch. He looked past his feet and he saw a couple of zombies heading in his direction–one a policeman in uniform with one eye gone, badge still on his chest, and the other a young woman dressed like a cheerleader. She had one arm missing, and her leg had been nastily chewed on.

One More Time, Free to Read Today: A Zombie Thanksgiving

ZTH

Yes, I updated this cover a bit. Added the turkey, lightened it up. I don’t think this is the final version, but it might be one I run with for a while. I would love to hear your thoughts on it.

Dawn sat there a moment, collecting herself, listening to that rustling at the door; whatever was outside this room really wanted to be inside. She looked around and realized, she was sitting in pitch black. The light on top of her head had been on when she fell asleep and had burnt out while she dreamed.

She tossed the strap with the light on it and rushed across the room to her bag. While she rummaged in the bag, she realized the rustling sound that woke her up, was the wooden legs of the desk sliding across the floor. The desk was moving away from its protective position, as someone or something slowly entered the room.

Dawn plowed quicker through her bag, rummaging blindly in the dark through everything in it. She found no back up light. She had forgotten the spare, but she didn’t panic. She stayed calm and cool, as she grabbed her pistol, making sure it was cocked and ready, and backed away from the door.

One More Time, Free to Read Today: The Dead of Winter

DOW2

Eric grabbed a shoulder of one of the dead zombies hanging from the spike on the door, and hoisted himself up to the window. He hung there a moment with one hand, cleaning out the glass with the other. When he was sure it was clean, he dropped back down to the ground. He motioned to Bobby that it was safe to come over.

“Everything okay,” Bobby asked, as he stopped in front of Eric.

“I don’t hear anyone inside so I’m going to climb in and hoist you in after.”

“You mean, get up close to those things on the spike.”

Another moan, followed by more.

They were really close now.

Another Sunday and More Zombie Stories Free to Read: A Zombie New Year’s Eve, The Dead of Winter, and A Zombie Thanksiving

Yes, another Sunday has arrived and more zombies for you to consume, much like those walkers hunting for your precious flesh. So, read on to see how you can get your copy today.

EXP: A ZOMBIE THANKSGIVING

He made his way out of the parking lot, and Dawn took another quick scan. No zombies about, just Mike evaporating into the distance. She turned back to the store, steadied her nerves, and turned on her light (this light was on a strap that ran around her head, so she could keep her hands free).  She made sure her weapons were ready to do the job they were meant to do, knife in place and gun ready to fire. She started to walk, ever so slightly, crunching on broken glass, moving from the light into the dark.

The smell inside the store wasn’t pleasant. All kinds of putrid things in a state of decay mingled and danced together in the non-air-conditioned air. Those smells were having a nice party in this tight enclosed airless space. Dawn tried to hold her breath and not breathe in too much of it, as she stopped just inside the double doors. She kneeled down in front of two bodies that were dead, flat, and squished. These bodies (elderly man and woman) looked like they had fallen down and nobody had bothered to help them up as the crowd trampled over them in a mad rush for supplies. She said a prayer for them, and then stood up. That’s when she heard it. It was a clicking sound, silent electronic keys being punched over and over again, hard to hear unless you were inside the store. She turned her light in the direction of that sound.

ZTH

Standing at one of the cash registers was a zombie, still dressed in her pink and grey “County Supermarket” uniform, partially eaten, name tag askew. Most of her face was gone, and she had huge chunks of flesh taken out of her neck and arms. She was still doing her job, punching keys on the register and scanning a can over and over again across a silent sensor. She didn’t even notice Dawn, as Dawn stood there smiling at the absurdity. The light on Dawn’s head also showed a dead body lying over the conveyor belt, a can of something in his hand. A can of something he would never need. Dawn wondered if this guy was one of the tramplers. Stepping on that elderly couple at the front of the store, ignoring the pleas of the two dying underneath the charging crowd. If he was one of those tramplers, then what good had it done him to ignore them? His life was just as wasted as those two flattened corpses.

A Zombie New Year’s Eve has a new cover. It is finally getting to where I want it to be. There are a few things with it that bug me, but I think it captures the spirit of that holiday.
